What’s the Best Material for your Signage?
If you’re investing in signage for your business, you want it to look sharp for years to come – no matter the weather. In Northern Ireland and across the UK, signage has to withstand wind, rain, salt in the air, and occasional snow, which means durability is just as important as design.
From civic buildings to high street shops and everything in between, we know what works. Here’s our breakdown of the most popular materials for outdoor signs – and how to choose the right one for your business.
.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is incredibly durable, resists corrosion, and gives a clean, professional look that suits both modern and traditional architecture. Perfect for 3D lettering and bespoke fabrications, it adds impact and credibility to any brand presence.
We recently created stainless steel letters with 50mm returns for Lagan Valley Island – a bold and lasting feature for a prominent civic centre. While steel can be heavy and more complex to install, our team is experienced in designing custom frames and handling technical on-site fittings.
✔ Rust-resistant
✔ Timeless and high-end
✔ Perfect for dimensional signage
Dibond
Dibond is an aluminium composite that’s widely used in commercial signage for its smooth finish, excellent printability, and weather resistance. It offers a perfect balance of durability and visual appeal, making it one of our go-to materials for fascia signage, business parks, and wayfinding systems.
It’s a strong, rust-proof, and UV-resistant solution that holds its shape and appearance over time – even on large-scale installs.
✔ Lightweight but strong
✔ Clean, flat surface for graphics
✔ Non-corrosive and waterproof
✔ Long-lasting and low maintenance
Our take: Dibond is a versatile all-rounder, perfect for clients who want a professional finish with reliable performance.
CBond
Cbond is a high-performance aluminium composite panel, similar to Dibond, but manufactured to an industrial specification for added durability. It consists of two pre-painted aluminium sheets bonded to a solid polyethylene core, giving it exceptional rigidity and weather resistance.
This material is ideal when you need something that’s dimensionally stable, UV-resistant, and capable of withstanding wind, rain and varying temperatures without warping or fading.
✔ Strong and rigid
✔ Excellent for large-scale signage
✔ Long-term outdoor performance
✔ Smooth finish, great for full-colour graphics
Our take: We recommend Cbond when your sign needs to go the distance – whether it’s roadside, construction hoarding, or architectural signage.
Foamex
Foamex is a PVC foam board that’s lightweight, smooth, and easy to print on. It’s a versatile material, often used for signage, exhibition panels, or short-term outdoor signage when budget is a key factor.
Although not as robust as aluminium composites, Foamex holds up surprisingly well in outdoor environments. It’s also easy to mount and cut into custom shapes.
✔ Affordable and lightweight
✔ Smooth printing surface
Our take: Foamex is a great choice for businesses looking for maximum visual impact on a tight budget – ideal for signage, event branding, or community promotions.
Choosing the Right Material: What to Consider
When deciding on the right signage material, think about:
-
Lifespan: Is this a short-term promotion or a permanent installation?
-
Location: Will it face strong sunlight, rain, or wind exposure?
-
Style: Do you want a sleek, flush finish or something with dimensional depth?
-
Budget: Some materials offer similar looks with more flexibility on cost.
